oak tree

on the hill by the wizened oak tree
where at dusk the rooks fly
home to roost, i look out at the great sky
watching over the tired brown fields,
and the mishapen naked hedgerows
and i wonder how many people
have ever stood by this oak over the years
as it grew from acorn to sapling to giant
i join them in watching this timeless landscape,
and it's magnificent, all of it.

A powerful stone - full of vivid, naturalistic imagery and the resonance of a big question lingering within it.
